Myth #2: Old dogs are grumpy.
Mitchell, the smiling 11-year-old Golden mix, several months after his adoption.
Most older dogs are not grumpy unless they are ill or in pain. If your old dog becomes grumpy, take him to a vet right away to diagnose and treat possible illness.

ARTIST SANDI GOLD'S “ADOPT-A-PET-PORTRAIT” PROGRAM HELPS THE SANCTUARY FOR SENIOR DOGS

Renown artist Sandi Gold has painted a portrait of our very own Burt, the Sanctuary's outstanding therapy dog. After hearing of the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the countless stories of animals separated from their loving families, Gold knew it was time for her to act on behalf of animals in need all across the country. She decided to paint portraits of rescued animals for animal rescue and welfare organizations to put up for “adoption” to help them with their fundraising. Consequently Sandi's “Adopt-A-Pet-Portrait” program was born.

Here's how the program works: You can "adopt" a portrait of the Sanctuary's therapy dog BURT printed on heavy archival watercolor paper using archival inks; each print is signed by the artist. For every print sold, artist Sandi Gold will donate 20% to The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs. She will donate $50.00 when the original painting sells.

Both the original painting and prints may be purchased by going to Sandi Gold's web site www.sandigold.com. Or just click on the reproduction of Burt's painting below.

Burt, a Golden Retriever/Saint Bernard mix, was found in a ditch in rural Ohio as an old dog in serious trouble. Over two years later at almost 100 pounds and approaching ten years old, Burt serves the Sanctuary as therapy dog, faithfully visiting many friends in assisted living and adult day care, bringing his own unique brand of therapy and cheer to those most in need.

If you would like to commission Sandi Gold to paint your own pet, e-mail a photo of your pet to sandi@sandigold.com for a free estimate. Mention The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs and Sandi will donate $50.00 for each commission she paints.

About Sandi Gold: Gold received her BFA from Boston University College of Visual Arts and, following study in Aix-en-Provençe, France, received a Cértificat D'Etude from the Leo Marchutz School of Painting. Since that time she has been featured in The New York Times, People Magazine, The Boston Globe, and has appeared on the ABC's news show 20/20. She has been interviewed on both the Connecticut and National Public Radio. For more information about Sandi Gold and her painting, visit her web site at www.sandigold.com.

We Need Foster Homes for Large Dogs (and smaller ones, too)

The Sanctuary always has need of foster homes for large dogs. Sadly we turn away a large number of beautiful, friendly  large dogs each month. Fran, pictured below, found her special home after being in her new foster home for just a few days. Typically, large black dogs are the last to place. Foster or adopt a big black dog from the Sanctuary. You will be glad you did.

Fran, 8 year-old Lab mix, was quickly adopted by Gretchen, a vet student

Clark, a large blind dog, was adopted by a wonderful family after his appearance on  WKYC TV3 on the Sunday morning news on June 13, 2004. Tell WKYC how much you enjoy the "pooch parade" on Sundays. And thank them for their support of rescue dogs.

Please open your heart and home to a large dog in need. They are just waiting for you. If you can foster a large dog,  please contact the Sanctuary. Sadly, we turn away many large, friendly senior dogs each month. You can make a difference in a big dog's life.
